Handlebar. Fu Manchu. Pencil. Duster. Goatee. Or just a MO. It’s that time of year ladies and gentlemen. That time to grow your mo’s for the month of November or rather…MOvember. It’s something that has become quite the movement here in Canada and around the world. The past few years Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment has participated and our Leafs players and Alumni have jumped on board to shave and grow their moustaches for a great cause.
“During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of millions of moustaches around the world. Through the power of the moustache, vital funds and awareness are raised to combat prostate and testicular cancer and mental health challenges.” – Movember.com
Current Leafs joining Team MOple Leaf Sports & Entertainment this year include James Van Riemsdyk, Mark Fraser, Cody Franson and Colton Orr alongside Toronto Raptors forward Steve Novak, Toronto FC’s Ryan Richter, Manuel Aparicio, Steven Caldwell and fifteen players from the Toronto Marlies.
Fans are encouraged to support or join Team MOple Leaf Sports & Entertainment to raise awareness by prompting conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health.
In addition to the awareness and fundraising, the Maple Leafs will host a Movember Awareness Night on November 19, 2013 when they play host to the Phoenix Coyotes.
During my first season with the Leafs and only a month in to the job with one prior meeting with this Leafs legend…I was asked to shave off his famous handlebar moustache. No big deal right…? WRONG!! The facial feature that had been with him for 18 years, and synonymous with his name, would come off in front of 30+ media cameras, writers, and reporters. I was to shave off WENDEL CLARK’s MO! With no prior experience (obviously), pressure of a hundred eyes glaring, and the re-assuring nervousness from Wendel himself…it was a perfect setup. Luckily there was no blood drawn and a clean shave was achieved, I breathed a sigh of relief, and Wendel would start the month with a clean shave.
Here we go…..
A few of the Leafs will be growing their moustaches this November and we will let you know starting tomorrow who they will be. Will you be growing out your moustache?
We also have to recognize the impeccable moustache of former Leaf Lanny McDonald.
