On April 17, 1951 one of the best defencemen in Leafs history was born in Kiruna, Sweden. In his 16 seasons with the blue and white he appeared in 1,148 regular season games and 81 playoff games, the 3rd most in Leafs history and the first to hit the 1,000 NHL game mark for European players.
He was inducted in to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1996, had his number 21 raised to the rafters of Air Canada Centre ten years later in 2006, and has a list of accomplishments to his name.
Former captain Mats Sundin began his hockey career in Borje’s hockey school and current Leaf Carl Gunnarsson is also a fan. Here’s a photo of the two last fall.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY BORJE!
