Some Leafs News & Notes

A couple of Maple Leafs will be taking part in the World Hockey Championships in Finland/Sweden starting May4th. Captain Dion Phaneuf will be representing Canada at the Worlds while Joey Crabb has been named to the USA roster. Both John-Michael Liles and Phil Kessel have said they will not take part while Carl Gunnarsson was injured the last week of the season and his status for the tournament was in doubt.

Leafs assistant coach Scott Gordon has been named head coach for Team USA. This is the third straight year that he will be head coach at the Worlds. Fellow Leafs assistant Greg Cronin will assist Gordon for the Americans.

While the Leafs have headed home for the summer, a few players in the organization continue their playoffs in the Canadian Hockey League.

It has been a very good second round for Brad Ross and the Portland Winterhawks. The winger exploded for four goals in a gameĀ 3 win over the Kamloops Blazers. He scored two shorthanded goals, one even strength goal and one on the power play. Check out the highlights of his big night. Wednesday during game 4, Ross had an assist and was a plus three in the 5-4 loss. Game five is Saturday in Portland.

After a slow start in the first round, Ross has eight points (six goals, two assists) and a plus six rating in the series. He currently sits ninth in playoff scoring in the Western Hockey League.

In the OHL, it has been a tough second round for Sam Carrick and the Brampton Battalion who are down 3-0 to the Niagara Ice Dogs. Carrick has posted two points in the series with a minus two rating. The Battalion will look to avoid elimination tonight at home.

Greg McKegg and the London Knights are tied 2-2 with the Saginaw with game five in London on Friday. McKegg has recorded five points in the series and he has nine points in the playoffs thus far.

Two Leafs prospects are going head-to-head in the Kitchener/Plymouth series which is tied at 2-2. After a big opening round, Andrew Crescenzi has just one point and a plus three rating in the series. Rugged forward Jamie Devane has been held off the scoresheet in the series. For the playoffs he has three points and 17 penalty minutes.
