World Hockey Championship Update

rielly488dec28

The Maple Leafs will have several players wearing the Red and White at the upcoming World Hockey Championship in Belarus from May 9-25.

Players who are confirmed playing for Canada include James Reimer, Morgan Rielly and Nazem Kadri. This will be the second time Reimer has played in the World Championship while Rielly and Kadri have both represented Canada at World Junior tournaments.

The only other Leaf at this point who will definitely be playing is Jake Gardiner for the USA.

If more Leafs players are added to their respective countries, we will be sure to ...

Throwback Thursday: Happy Birthday Borje

Toronto Maple Leafs v Boston Bruins

On April 17, 1951 one of the best defencemen in Leafs history was born in Kiruna, Sweden. In his 16 seasons with the blue and white he appeared in 1,148 regular season games and 81 playoff games, the 3rd most in Leafs history and the first to hit the 1,000 NHL game mark for European players.

He was inducted in to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1996, had his number 21 raised to the rafters of Air Canada Centre ten years later in 2006, and has a list of accomplishments to his ...

Leafs To Select Eighth Overall

nonis500apr7

The 2014 NHL Draft lottery was held on Tuesday and the Florida Panthers will have the first overall selection on June 27th in Philadelphia after winning the lottery and pushing Buffalo to number two.

The Maple Leafs retained the eighth overall pick after having just a 3.6% chance of winning the first overall pick.

This will be third time in Leafs history that they will have the 8th pick in the NHL Draft. In 1970, the Leafs chose Darryl Sittler and in 1992, Brandon Convery was selected.

The weighted odds of winning the lottery ...

Brendan Shanahan is the new CEO of culture.

shanahan400apr14

Quiet.

That’s what Brendan Shanahan took as a good day during his term as czar of NHL player discipline.

“Our greatest compliment working in player safety was silence,” Shanahan said as he was introduced as the Leafs new president and alternate governor at the Air Canada Centre, Monday.

“It’s a little bit like being a referee. If people forget you’re there you know you refereed a very good game.”

Good luck with that.

There will be no more quiet days for the 45-year-old Shanahan. He has become the majordomo of one of the most intensely-followed ...

Shanahan’s Resume And Outsider Status Are His Greatest Assets

shanhan600apr11_2

Loyal to none and bigger than life

Of all the qualities Brendan Shanahan brings to the presidency of the Toronto Maple Leafs, those two may be the most important.

It might feel like a reach to brand Shanahan an outlier. His resume screams hockey insider. As the NHL’s czar of player safety, he knows not only every middle to upper echelon figure at the NHL’s offices in New York and Toronto but every miscreant, their coach, GM, agent and union rep.

How connected is Shanahan?

Well, start with the company he keeps. A 2013 ...

Throwback Thursday: On The Road

Duff... Stewart Armstrong Duff Baun

Nowadays professional athletes travel in style when visiting other teams in the league courtesy of nice charter planes catered to their needs. And as the Leafs continue their “road” trip in Florida, today’s throwback features a group of Leafs boarding their bus to hit the road in 1958.

Pictured left to right are goalie Ed Chadwick, Ron Stewart, George Armstrong, Dick Duff, and Bob Baun.

#MusicMonday: The Music Man

Maple Leaf GardensNovember 24, 1998

For 26 years Jimmy Holmstrom has been the man behind the organ at Leafs games. And if you ask anyone who has had the pleasure of watching a game from the organ loft they’ll tell you stories of Jimmy and his passion for the team. I got a chance to catch up with the man responsible for pressing play on the music, the keys on the organ, and most importantly the button for the goal horn.

BP: What’s your story with the team?

JH: I am a life-long Blue & ...

After The Fall: Now What?

nonis500apr7

I’m a glass overflowing kind of guy.

I think we’re going to get this climate change thing sorted out. Don’t ask me why, it’s just a feeling.

I’ll give you even money that Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin can still patch things up, if not for their sake then for the kids, Apple and Moses who, now that I think of it, might deserve new parents with better judgment.

And so I am happy to inform you that Leaf fans can now decide what’s worse, a sudden heartwrenching loss in Boston or the ...

Lupul To Have Knee Surgery

lupul600apr7

Joffrey Lupul was not on the ice Monday and head coach Randy Carlyle updated the status of the Leafs forward following practice in Tampa Bay.

“He is going to have surgery done on his knee,” Carlyle said. “It’s a meniscus procedure and will be done arthroscopically. It will be three weeks to a month recovery.”

Lupul will miss the final three regular season games and finishes the season with 44 points (22 goals, 22 assists) in 69 games.

Throwback Thursday: Brothers

Toronto Maple Leafs v Boston Bruins

While there has been family ties in all areas of the National Hockey League for years the most significant has been the presence of sibling players. With 47 pairs lacing them up for the same team and many others bearing rival sweaters the brotherly connections go back to the days of Henri and Maurice Richard, Frank and Peter Mahovlich, and all the way up to the current siblings like the Staal, Schenn, and Sedin brothers.

As we look forward to tonight’s matchup with the Boston Bruins we also take a look back ...
