Kadri Recalled By Leafs

Nazem-Kadri

The Maple Leafs had a new face at practice Wednesday as Nazem Kadri was recalled from the Toronto Marlies to take the place of injured forward Phiippe Dupuis who was placed on the injured reserve list.

Kadri practiced on a line with Tim Connolly andClarke MacArthur as the trio will lineup as a unit against the Buffalo Sabres at Air Canada Centre on Thursday. Kadri has already played three games with the Leafs this season and had one assist. In his 22 games with the Marlies, he has a team-high 22 points.

Speedy and gritty Darryl Boyce will also ...

PK Gets Extra Attention

jake-gardiner

The Leafs practiced Monday in preparation for Tuesday’s game against Carolina. There was lots of work done on the penalty killing as the Leafs have allowed six shorthanded goals in the last two games.

When he was asked about the penalty killing, head coach Ron Wilson discussed what he and his coaches are trying to instill in their players.

“Pressure, where our sticks are, it’s hard to work on shot blocking during practice for obvious reasons but constantly harping about being in shooting lanes,” he said.

One area that has hurt the Leafs ...

Who Is The Best Bet To Be A Cornerstone Player?

If you are wondering whether the Leafs are indeed on the upswing, if the team’s play over the last 12 months is really just a bubble in a bathtub full of failure, ask yourself this question.
If you were starting a new franchise right now, and you could draft just one Maple Leaf, who would it be?

Go ahead. Indulge me. Who is the best bet to be a cornerstone player?

James Reimer. Good choice. He’s 23 and while the sample size of 45 games is perilously small, you can argue that a ...

Leafs Getting Healthier

After a full day off on Wednesday, the Leafs were back on the ice for practice Thursday joined by Colby Armstrong and Clarke MacArthur who will both be in the lineup Friday in Washington.

Armstrong has missed the last 23 games with a high ankle sprain that has finally healed. MacArthur missed the game against the New Jersey Devils with an upper body injury but he has also been cleared to play.

Although only in his second season with the Leafs, the team’s record with Armstrong in the lineup is an impressive ...

What, We Worry?

I am a glass not just half full but a glass spilling out over the top soaking the feet of the ludicrously attractive, scandalously-attired female barkeep who has just won the 649 and is an instant away from announcing free drinks for everyone kind of guy.

I just don’t see how the Leafs aren’t going to make the playoff this year. Not only that, their odds increase substantially when the league re-aligns next season.

And I have some numbers to back it up in Ulmerstandings IX.

Reimer Cleared For Action

jamer-reimer

The Maple Leafs head back out on the road this weekend to Boston and New York and their fathers are joining them for the annual Father/Son trip.

“It’s always fun to have your Dad here for the two games to Boston and New York, it’s great,” Carl Gunnarsson told Leafs TV.

Many of the Dads were in attendance at Friday’s practice watching their sons go through their paces by head coach Ron Wilson.

“The guys will want to play hard in front of their Dads I would think,” Wilson said.

Lupul Third Star For November

For the second straight month, a Maple Leaf has been named one of the NHL’s Three Stars. Joffrey Lupul was the third star for November after recording 19 points (seven goals, 12 assists) in 14 games. The Leafs winger had at least one point in 12 of the 14 games in November.

Lupul is second in the NHL in scoring with 30 points, two behind teammate Phil Kessel for the NHL lead. He also sits seventh in goals (12) and third in assists (18).

His month started with a hat trick against the Devils ...

Gardiner Opening Eyes Around Hockey

Remember those colouring books where if you connected the lines a jumble of numbers became a flower pot or a circus elephant?

In the NHL, most of the numbers are obscured because of the speed of the game, a bounce off the boards, an unexpected move from a veteran or the zeal of a rookie who has been just called up.

There are two kinds of great players. Some see the flowerpot. Others just ride on a heightened instinct. They feel it.

When the Oilers ran a young Wayne Gretzky through a battery ...

Phaneuf Has Been Burke’s Pillar

When Brian Burke traded for Dion Phaneuf on January 31, 2010, he risked very little.

What he gained was the pillar on which every other acquisition has been positioned.

The players who went to Calgary, Jamal Mayers, Matt Stajan, Ian White and Nik Hagman were going to go somewhere. Ex-Leafs litter the NHL. Nikolai Kulemin, Mikhail Grabovski and Luke Schenn are the only holdovers from when Burke signed on three years ago Tuesday.

Ask Burke about the key moments in his time with the Leafs and he will start with January 31, 2010.

Phaneuf’s career had stalled in Calgary. Always a ...

Big Test For Leafs Against Bruins

The Maple Leafs hit the ice at the MasterCard Centre Tuesday in preparation for Wednesday’s home game against the Boston Bruins. Head coach Ron Wilson said after practice that both David Steckel and Carl Gunnarsson remain day-to-day with their upper body injuries.

Mikhail Grabovski will continue to centre the fourth line to start the game with Philippe Dupuis and Jay Rosehill.

James Reimer continues to work his way towards a return to the lineup by the end of the week with Wilson hoping that Reimer could dress as the back up on Saturday in Boston.

Check out the video from Wilson, Reimer, Tyler ...
