The 70th Anniversary Of D-Day


Seventy years ago, the invasion of Normandy and the liberation of Europe began. Conn Smythe’s 30th Battery (pictured here) saw action at the battle of Caen, part of the push inward after the initial landing at Juno Beach.

Conn Smythe pictured (first row centre), was wounded at the battle, taking a chuck of shrapnel from the German Luftwaffe, which nearly cost him his life.

Throwback Thursday: Tim Horton Hamburgers


The legendary Canadian coffee chain started by Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Tim Horton, celebrated its 50th anniversary back on May 17th but before the coffee and donuts there were burgers.

Fitting that it is also Burger Week here in Toronto, today’s throwback photo is one of Tim Horton Charcoal Broiled Hamburgers located in Scarborough. The burger shop was one of Tim’s many business ventures that eventually led to the extremely successful chain that still bears his name.

Finn, Bibeau Recognized For Play At Memorial Cup



Although the final result wasn’t what the players wanted, Matt Finn and Antoine Bibeau’s solid play at the 2014 Memorial Cup was recognized by the NHL’s Central Scouting.

Bibeau was named the Outstanding Goalie of the 2014 Memorial Cup. The 20-year-old made 178 saves in four games and finished the tournament with a 2.76 GAA and .932 save percentage. He was also named to the tournament All-Star team.

While Finn and the Storm were upset in the final on Sunday by Edmonton, the Etobicoke native was voted to the tournament All-Star team. ...

Canada, USA Eliminated From World Championship


It was a tough day at the World Hockey Championship for four Leafs players as they suffered tough defeats and will not medal at the tournament this year.

Morgan Rielly, Nazem Kadri, James Reimer and Canada fell 3-2 to Finland. It was the fifth straight year that Canada has been eliminated at the quarter-final stage of the World Championship.

Canada entered the third period with a 2-1 lead but Finland scored twice in the period including a late goal to upset Canada.

Leafs’ Finn And Bibeau Story Of Memorial Cup Tourney


London – One is the Memorial Cup’s leading plus minus player and captains the most impressive team in the tournament.

The other is a goalie who has led an upstart QMJHL team into the elimination bracket of the tournament.

It has been a winning week for Maple Leaf prospects Matt Finn of the Guelph Storm and Val-d’Or goalie Antoine Bibeau.

The 20-year-old Finn leads the tournament with a plus-eight as the Storm, the class of the field so far, await the winner of Friday’s game between Val-d’Or and the Edmonton Oil Kings.
