Throwback Thursday: Forces Night

Canadian Forces 59

The connection between the Canadian military and the Leafs goes back to when Conn Smythe decided to use the maple leaf as the team’s logo. Smythe had served as a soldier in the Great War and his uniform proudly showcased a maple leaf which lead him to put the iconic Canadian symbol on the sweaters of his team. Not only did the team wear the leaf on their sweaters but many players would also serve our country throughout the years.

Today the connection continues in the form of Canadian Forces Night. ...

Hot Kessel riding a wave of cool

Phil Kessel

Remember the player draft for the 2011 All-Star game in Raleigh?

Remember how Phil Kessel was picked last?

Two things about that:

First, do you remember how good he was about it, how he donated the $20,000 consolation prize to a Cancer charity and laughed off what was clearly an excruciating moment where he was last pick among 42 all-stars.

Anyone, anyone who was the last pick on the playground, not an uncommon bitter memory among sportswriters by the way, would have shuddered. I would have considered therapy.

“Something good (comes out of it),” Kessel ...

#HockeyTalks Night On Tuesday

raymond644jan27

The Leafs along with the other six Canadian teams are taking part in #HockeyTalks for the second consecutive year.

Hockey Talks is a month-long initiative of the seven Canadian NHL clubs to bring increased dialogue and awareness to mental health and effective treatments. The goal is to help bring this topic to the forefront in the public realm and alleviate misconceptions/stigma that has been unfairly associated with mental illness.

Leafs players will have Hockey Talks helmet decals and a group from Centre for Addiction & Mental Health will be in the Leafs community ...

Throwback Thursday: The masked men

Bower 2

In the words of Joe Bowen this week’s Throwback Thursday features ….”The Pillowed Protectors of the Pipes, Tenders of the Tinseled Twine, Representatives of the Roped Rotundas, Keepers of the Cabled Cabanas,” or in simple terms, goaltenders.

It has been long understood that goalies are interesting and maybe even a bit quirky. From stories of superstitions to just outward weirdness (Ilya Bryzgalov in 24/7) they’ve got to be a tad bit crazy to defend the net from high-speed rubber pucks.

What I’ve always found most interesting though is the headgear they sport. Over the years the style ...

Leafs hit road trip on a roll with Bozak key

Playing between Phil Kessel and James van Riemsdyk, Tyler Bozak has been red hot.

Playing between Phil Kessel and James van Riemsdyk, Tyler Bozak has been red hot.

He was a skinny, five-foot-nine 18-year-old on the bubble for the 2004-2005 version of the Junior A Victoria Salsa. You should know in the intervening years the Salsa refashioned themselves as the Victoria Grizzlies.

That fits. Tyler Bozak knows something about the elements that go into an overhaul.

“The NHL seemed the furthest away my first year in Victoria,” he said in a recent interview. “I went for a tryout and I was an undersized guy. I wasn’t ...

The Leafs & Saskatchewan

Clark488x276

There are two indispensable men in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan.

One is ready to declare Saskatchewan an outpost of Leafs Nation.

The other, Mayor Rob Saunders, has to be a bit more diplomatic.

“I’m a Leafs fan, always was” said Wes Ringland, the Zamboni driver at the Centennial Civic Centre Arena that will be the centerpiece of Hockey Day in Canada, Saturday.

“They’re a good Canadian team and my favourite player is Wendel Clark. It’ll be an honour to shake his hand.”

Former Leaf Colby Armstrong, one of the favourite hockey sons of the Saskatchewan side of ...

Clarkson, McLaren Placed On IR

clarkson305nov20

Head coach Randy Carlyle told the media following Friday’s practice at MasterCard Centre that David Clarkson and Frazer McLaren were both placed on Injured Reserve.

Clarkson has been dealing with elbow bursitis while McLaren has a bruised shoulder.  The Leafs are expected to recall someone from the Toronto Marlies. Carlyle mentioned that possible names who could be called up include Jerry D’Amigo, Troy Bodie and Jamie Devane.

Forward Dave Bolland skated once again before practice as he continues to make his way back from the lacerated ankle. Carlyle said that he “looked ...

Throwback Thursday: Get your program!

Program Arena Gardens

For many fans, buying the Official Program at a Leafs game is routine. For others it’s a souvenir. Either way, $5 gets you a book with the starting line-ups, bios on the players, photos, recent news and community initiatives and some fun features.

Programs have been sold at sporting events for years. And while the layout and quality has changed, they remain a part of the experience. I mean how many times have you been greeted by the sound of “Get your program here!” when you enter the arena?

Today’s throwback is ...

Throwback Thursday: Classic Memories

2014 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic - Toronto Maple Leafs v Detroit Red Wings

January 1st, 2014. A day I’ll never forget. Just over a week removed from the largest outdoor game in NHL history, the images are just as vivid in my head. While it may have taken many of us a while to thaw out from the cold, it will definitely take much longer to forget the atmosphere at the Big House on New Years Day.

With an abundance of snow falling and below zero temperatures, the #SEAofBLUE endured the elements to cheer the blue and white on to victory. Wings chants echoed ...
