Hello Columbus

The Toronto Maple Leafs are in Columbus tonight looking for a second straight win and hoping to match the work ethic that held Buffalo to just 10 shots Tuesday night.

The Sabres are not the Blue Jackets but Columbus does enter this game with eight regulars out of the lineup. The Jackets made the post season last spring despite 292 man games lost to injury.

Cody Franson knows that the team who swept the Leafs in three regular season games last campaign will be very tough tonight.

“They’re going to be a hard […]

Ready and Raring

Carter Ashton hasn’t played in an NHL regular season game since last April 8th in Tampa Bay.

The Winnipeg native played 32 games with the big club last season splitting his time with the Toronto Marlies as well. It was with the Marlies that Ashton would play his best hockey producing 21 points in 22 regular season games including 16 goals.

So it’s surprising that through 47 career games in the NHL Ashton is still looking for his 1st goal.

That won’t happen until he gets an opportunity to play, something that hasn’t […]

Daniel My Brother

As the eldest of two hockey playing brothers Andrew Winnik was a trailblazer of sorts for his younger sibling Daniel growing up in Mississauga.
Two years his junior usually prevented Daniel from playing with his older brother until the pair teamed up with the Wexford Raiders in the 2001-02 season.

That collaboration lasted one campaign before Andrew was off to Ferris State on a scholarship.

A year later and Daniel took his talents to the University of New Hampshire where he’d star with the WildCats for three seasons.
And while Andrew’s pro career consisted […]

Leafs-Islanders Preview

The Leafs three game road trip takes them into Long Island tonight and into Ottawa tomorrow against teams that have started their respective seasons with 4-1 records.

The Islanders might arguably be the best club the Leafs will have faced this season with Jaroslav Halak, Johnny Boychuk and John Tavares providing balance from back through the front of the lineup.

The Islanders have gone 5-2-1 in their last 8 games against the Leafs and began this season at 4-0 for the first time in franchise history.

Stopping Tavares will be a key for […]

Motown Preview

The Leafs and Wings close out their home-and-home series tonight in Detroit with expectations high following Toronto’s 4-1 setback Friday night.

The Leafs focus this evening will deal with handling the Red Wings’ back pressure.

Detroit continually limited Toronto’s time and space with the puck last night and Henrik Zetterberg made them pay.
Zetterberg became the the first Wing to record four assists in a game against the Leafs since Brendan Shanahan accomplished the feat.

The Leafs convened for dry land exercises this morning at their downtown team hotel before refining a game plan […]

Thrown For A Lupe

There’s little margin for error in the Toronto Maple Leafs’ quest for an elusive playoff spot.

Health is wealth so there is certainly concern over the well being of 2nd line winger Joffrey Lupul.

The 22 goal scorer last season did not participate with the main group at practice Thursday.

The club announced that Lupul was dealing with a lower body ailment, would be assessed later in the day and his status for Friday’s game would be determined then.

Lupul’s absence saw Brandon Kozun bumped to the 2nd line while Matt Frattin, Carter Ashton […]

Manhattan Project

The Toronto Maple Leafs checked into New York City in the early hours Sunday following their 5-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins at Air Canada Centre.

There would be no morning skate just a dryland session at the team hotel with strength coach Anthony Belza.

Two sub-par efforts on home ice hasn’t sat well with the Leafs as they enter a proverbial hornets nest in the Rangers’ home opener at Madison Square Garden.

The Leafs gave up three power play goals against the Penguins and have scored just two even strength goals in […]

Panik And Pens Prep

The Leafs finalized preparations for Pittsburgh’s arrival on Saturday with a 90 minute practice Friday and with a new look on the right side.
Just a day after being claimed on waivers from Tampa, Richard Panik took a regular shift on the 4th line alongside Peter Holland and Daniel Winnik.

Although Randy Carlyle wouldn’t confirm Panik’s participation in Saturday’s lineup, it does look like Matt Frattin could be a healthy scratch against Pittsburgh.

Panik wore number 18 in practice on Friday, the same number worn by another Slovak and current Leaf scout┬áPeter Ihnacak […]

A Not So Off Day

There’s never a dull moment in the ebb and flow activities of the Toronto Maple Leafs even on an off day following Wednesday’s 4-3 loss to Montreal.

The team spent Thursday morning in the gym undergoing a dry land workout while Cody Franson, Josh Leivo and Carter Ashton skated on their own.

Leivo was subsequently sent back to the Toronto Marlies along with Troy Bodie while Ashton still remains with the big club.

The Leafs then announced that they’d acquired right winger Richard Panik off waivers from the Tampa Lightning.

The 6-2, 200 lbs […]

Let The Games Begin

The Toronto Maple Leafs were put through their paces Tuesday in a final preparation for Wednesday’s season opener against visiting Montreal.
It was a high-tempo skate with an emphasis placed on special teams and neutral zone coverage.

The ability to dominate the centre line and force opposing teams to dump the puck rather than carry it into the Leafs’ end will go a long way toward improving D-zone efficiency.

Tuesday’s lines and pairings were identical to Monday’s practice meaning two players will make their NHL debuts against Montreal.

Brandon Kozun and Stuart Percy are […]
