Reimer Backstops Canada To Win

The 2014 World Hockey Championship continued on Friday and it was a good day for Leafs netminder James Reimer as he stopped 21 of 22 shots in Canada’s 6-1 win over Italy. Reimer is 2-1 in three games with a 2.27 GAA.

With the win, Canada sits in first place in Group A ahead of Sunday’s showdown with Sweden (9:45am TSN).

Nazem Kadri and Morgan Rielly were both held off the scoresheet but Rielly did play 15:47 which was the highest ice-time for him in the tournament. Kadri played over 11 minutes.

Kadri, Rielly Help Canada To Down Denmark

Canada continued their winning ways at the World Hockey Championship on Thursday as they defeated Denmark 6-1. The win temporarily moved Canada back to first place in Group A pending Sweden’s result against France.

Nazem Kadri had two assists on the night along with four shots, +2 rating in 14:30 of ice-time. Kadri has recorded three assists in the first four games of the tournament as he plays on a line with Cody Hodgson and Troy Brouwer.

Rookie defenceman Morgan Rielly continues to be Canada’s seventh defenceman and playing on the powerplay. ...

On this day, May 15, back in 1973 the 11th NHL Amateur Draft took place in Montreal.

While Denis Potvin was selected 1st overall by the New York Islanders, the Leafs scored Lanny McDonald with the 4th overall pick and Ian Turnbull with the 11th.

Leafs Prospects To Take Part In Memorial Cup

The 2014 MasterCard Memorial Cup begins this Friday in London and the Leafs will be well represented. Ryan Rupert (London), Matt Finn (Guelph) and Antoine Bibeau (Val-d’Or) will be aiming to win the biggest prize in Canadian junior hockey.

All three players had outstanding seasons for their respective teams none more so than 2013 sixth round selection Antoine Bibeau who backstopped Val-d’Or to the QMJHL President’s Cup championship. Monday’s World Championship Wrap Up

Team Canada won their second straight game at the World Hockey Championship on Monday as they defeated the Czech Republic 4-3.

Leafs netminder James Reimer started for Canada and turned aside 31 shots to pick up his first win in the 2014 tournament. Defenceman Morgan Rielly scored a power play goal for his first point of the tournament and it would be the eventual game winner as the Canada allowed two third period goals to hang on for the win. Rielly played just 3:30 in the game as the seventh defeneman.

Canada Stunned By France

Team Canada suffered a 3-2 shootout loss to France on the opening day of the 2014 World Hockey Championship.

James Reimer was in net for Canada and made 26 saves in the defeat. He was beaten once in the shootout as Pierre-Edouard Bellemare scored on a high wrist shot to give France the win. It is expected that Ben Scrivens starts Saturday’s game against Slovakia (1:30pm TSN).
