The Leafs had both James Reimer and James van Riemsdyk at practice Friday as they prepared for Saturday’s game in Chicago.

Head coach Randy Carlyle said that it is a good chance both will be able to play in Chicago.

After leaving Thursday’s game, Reimer admitted that the team doctors played it safe and kept him out the game.

Marlies defenceman T.J. Brennan is on a run for the ages

T.J. Brennan is on fire.

The Marlies defenceman scored seven goals in the Marlies first three games. He has two hat tricks and 10 points.

There is no precedent for this kind of offensive output by a Marlies defenceman. Even if you look North, Brennan’s feat is a staggering rarity. The last hat trick scored by a Leaf defenceman was authored by Ian Turnbull 31 years ago.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Marlies goalie Drew MacIntyre, a 10-year pro, “but I played with T.J. in Rochester (in 2011-2012) and I know […]

Throwback Thursday: Wendel vs. Whalers

Wendel Clark Of Toronto

The Carolina Hurricanes are in town tonight to face off against the Leafs in the first meeting between the two clubs this season. So it’s rather fitting that today’s throwback photo is one that features the Leafs and Hartford Whalers. After the 1996-97 season the Whalers relocated to North Carolina and became the Carolina Hurricanes.

This picture was taken sometime during the 1986-87 season in Hartford, Connecticut. Wendel Clark can be seen moving in on a Whaler who is missing his stick. And if you look closely, adorned just under Wendel’s left […]

If Leafs Stay Defensive 100 Points in Reach

Jonathan Bernier and James Reimer would be the key elements of a 100-point season.

Jonathan Bernier and James Reimer would be the key elements of a 100-point season.

Are the Leafs a 100-point team?

Of course they’re not, silly. They only have 12 points.

So how to explain the deluge of good fortune that is a 6-1 record with only one overwhelmingly convincing  victory (last weeks’ 4-0 win over Nashville) in the mix?

Let me give you a hint: the Leafs are actually better than people are saying because they are dramatically improved in the only stat that counts.

They are certainly better than what Randy Carlyle is […]

JVR Takes Part In Portion Of Practice

The Leafs hit the ice at MasterCard Centre on Wednesday as they get set to host the Carolina Hurricanes Thursday. James van Riemsdyk skated for 40 minutes before leaving practice as he continues to deal with an upper body injury.

Head coach Randy Carlyle said that there has been progress with van Riemsdyk and hopefully with more treatment over the next 24 hours that he could be in action against the Hurricanes but that won’t be known until after the game day skate.

van Riemsdyk has five goals and six points in six games this […]

Bolland Misses Practice With Maintenance Day

The Maple Leafs hit the ice Friday in preparation for Saturday’s home game against the Edmonton Oilers but they were without forward Dave Bolland who had a maintenance day.

There was some good news as Cody Franson took part in practice after being cut on the nose when he as hit from behind during Thursday’s game. He practiced with a full cage and is expected to play Saturday night.

Prior to practice, the team announced that defenceman T.J. Brennan was assigned to the Toronto Marlies after being recalled Wednesday.

Marlies prospect makes sure things don’t blow up in his face.

It is a testament to Christopher Gibson’s dexterity that the Toronto Marlies 20-year-old goalie handles the puck as he would a hand grenade.

He has handled hand grenades. He prefers pucks but sometimes they don’t give the kid a choice.

Gibson is one of the more arresting stories on the Marlies, a private in the Finnish army who this summer fulfilled half of the 180 days of military service every Finnish male is obliged to provide. His North American peers, meanwhile, hung out at the cottage and worked out.

The Leafs tendered Gibson […]

Throwback Thursday: Signing Day

Signing Day 11

Autograph. Signature. John Hancock. Whatever you want to call it, it’s a part of the gig as an NHL player. But it’s also much more. In many cases it represents a moment or story that a fan will remember forever.

For some, an autograph can come out of a chance meeting, set appearance date, practice, game, or in this day and age certain online auctions and stores.

Throughout the season the Leafs will also have dedicated signing days. A time for players to filter through an abundance of merchandise, sign their autograph, and move on.

The […]
