Class of 2014 is Spread Far and Wide

Rinat Valiev

The Maple Leafs’ draft class of 2014 is spread far and wide on both sides of the Atlantic with most of the attention centred upon 1st round pick William Nylander.

The 8th overall selection last June has had an impressive start to his Swedish pro season with 14 points in 13 games played for Modo. Friday night however Nylander was forced to leave the game after taking a teammate’s skate to his head off a draw. Nylander sustained a neck injury and will miss tonight’s game with Modo but expects to […]

Prospect Update

It may not have been a terrific weekend for either the Maple Leafs or the Marlies but the organization’s prospects can certainly say otherwise.
Both the Leafs and their AHL affiliate lost a pair of games but in Sweden William Nylander and Andreas Johnson continue to impress.

Nylander, the organization’s top pick in June scored once and assisted on another Sunday as his Modo team lost 5-4 to Leksands.

Johnson’s Frolunda squad also lost as they were shutout by Brynas with former Marlie Greg Scott scoring the game winner in that contest on […]

Always Tough In Buff

The Toronto Maple Leafs come to Buffalo tonight as obvious favourites against a Sabre team that can’t score, is dead last on the penalty kill and possessors of just one home victory this season.

But all those dreadful factors mean nothing from a historical perspective when the Leafs visit Buffalo.

The Sabres are 13-1-1 in their last 15 games at First Niagara Center against Toronto.

So how do the Leafs prepare emotionally for a Buffalo team after going toe to toe with the conference’s best club from Pittsburgh 24 hours earler.

“I think you’ve […]

Really Special Teams

The Leafs have made arguably their greatest strides in special teams one season to the next.

The power play last spring was 6th best league-wide and 16 games into this season they remain 6th clicking at an amazing 24.1 percent success rate.

Tyler Bozak has contributed with 5 power play goals already this season tying his entire campaign total from 2013-14.

Bozak leads the NHL in power play tallies sharing that lead with the Penguins Chris Kunitz and Evgeni Malkin.

“It was kind of a slow start, but the last couple of years we’ve […]

Bend But Rarely Break

The Leafs recent trend of giving up the game’s opening goal especially in the last 4 games is a dangerous deficit in which to come back from.
Toronto for its part has managed to go 2-1-1 in those 4 games due in part to improved compete- level and new found resilience in the 3rd period.

Third period collapses are legendary in these parts dating back to Boston and game 7 in the spring of 2013.
Last season the Leafs were outshot 949 to 755 in the 3rd period and outscored 93-79.

This season points […]

Getaway Day

The Leafs departed Denver Friday morning bruised but in good shape otherwise following a hard earned point the night before.

Daniel Winnik looked fine beyond a welt to a cheekbone following a scary spill 14 seconds into his only shift.

Winnik’s durability can’t be questioned. He’s missed only eight games the past four seasons even playing 84 games in the 2011-12 campaign between Colorado and San Jose.

Jake Gardiner walked without a limp Friday morning.

Gardiner played only 2:55 after blocking a shot leaving the game with a bone bruise.

The status of both players […]

Mile High Expectations

The Toronto Maple Leafs enter a 2nd straight game where expectations surely revolve around 2 points and nothing less. They struggled early Tuesday against a struggling club in Arizona losing 3-2.

Tonight they’ll face an Avalanche team that has won only twice in its last 11 games and has given up 3 or more goals in 11 of 14 games this season.

Colorado dropped a 5-2 decision to Vancouver Tuesday and addressed the situation with a players only meeting afterwards. It’s a far cry from last season’s 112 point campaign, the 2nd […]

A Competitive Crease

The Maple Leafs practiced in Scottsdale, Arizona Wednesday morning prior to an afternoon flight to Denver.

Twelve games into the regular season the buzz along media row for this day at least was goaltending and who exactly was 1a and 1b.
James Reimer got the start in Phoenix following Saturday’s 45 save performance against Chicago on Saturday.

Jonathan Bernier had given up just one goal in his previous two starts and expected to get the nod last night.
He didn’t and will likely get his shot Thursday in Colorado when he gets an opportunity […]

Game Day in Arizona

Another gorgeous day in Scotsdale, Arizona as the Maple Leafs declined their usual game day skate this morning in exchange for meetings and a light workout at the team hotel.

The Leafs are undefeated in regulation on the road this season at 3-0-1 and a good 1st period tonight is critical.

Toronto is 5-0 when scoring the game’s opening goal and play an Arizona team that has given up 17 first period goals this season.

Possession will be another key as the Coyotes are 2nd in the NHL in faceoff success at 54.6 […]

Hooked on Phoenix

The Maple Leafs were in good spirits as they left chilly Toronto Monday morning for the warm climes of Phoenix and a mid-afternoon practice in suburban Scottsdale.

At 23 celsius Arizona might be warm but the Leafs are hoping to get hot. They’re 4-1-1 in their past 6 games and plus 8 at even strength in their last three contests.

Toronto and more specifically James Reimer weathered a 3rd period barrage Saturday night that saw  Chicago put 26 shots on the Leaf net.
For the record the team record for shots against in […]
