#MusicMonday: Down With Webster

While there are many musicians that call themselves fans of the Blue and White only a few could be considered diehard. One of those musicians is Tyler Armes, bassist and keyboardist for the Toronto band Down With Webster. While Tyler is in Los Angeles he took some time to talk Leafs, the team he grew up cheering for.

BP: You’re a diehard Leafs fan…so tell us the story behind your love for the Blue and White?
TA: I grew up in Toronto playing hockey my whole life, and as you know we take our Leafs quite seriously around here. My Dad was always a huge fan and brought me to games back at Maple Leaf Gardens. He is a composer/songwriter and for years did all of the music for Hockey Night in Canada. The Saturday night song is actually his that they still use today – “All the big guns gonna shoot out the lights, the place will be rocking cuz it’s Saturday night!” From a young age it was very clear Leafs=yes Habs=no. Some things never change.  Hockey and music are both in my DNA, I still play a couple times a week out in L.A. and always rep my JVR or Lupul jersey on the ice.

BP: Which Leafs player was your favourite growing up? Why?

TA: Growing up I was a huge Wendel Clark fan. Watching Clark beat up McSorley for taking a run at Gilmour was so bad-#$%. Definitely my favourite moment in Don Cherry’s Rock’em Sock’em 5 (aside from the techno rap song and music video of Don “rapping.”)
BP: Favourite Leafs memory of all time?
TA: I think both were from the 93′ playoff run we had. Gilmour’s famous wrap around fake against Cujo and then Nikolai Borschevsky’s deflection in Game 7 against the Red Wings were both such exciting moments as a Leaf fan.
BP: If you could trade places with one current Leaf who would it be?
TA: I would have to say Lupul. He plays the kind of hockey I tried to play growing up. He’s a leader and a sniper….oh and he has a very large diehard female fanbase, every girl I know loves the guy.  I know he’s really into music and plays some guitar. I’d happily trade some lessons for some ice time. Brooke can you set that up or what!?
BP: Heard you’re buddies with Morgan Rielly, does that mean he’s your favourite current player?
TA: Rielly is an awesome guy. I had the chance to hang with him and some of the guys this year when I was back in Toronto. He has some pretty sick dance moves hahaha so does his buddy Gardiner. Lot’s of finger pointing and “air pistols” being shot.  I think he’s going to be a big part of the Leafs blue line. The kid can fly and has great offensive awareness/vision. We need that right now!
BP: Choose one Leafs player past or present to be in the band, who would it be & why?
TA: Past: Gilmour (enough said) and Clark (security)
Present: Rielly (dance moves) and Lupul (will draw all the babes)
BP: Down With Webster has a new album out called Party For Your Life do you have a favourite track?
TA: I like different ones for different reasons. The song “Chills” that we did with Boi-1da and the Maven Boys is one of my favourites. I’m always thinking about the one I’m writing next though.
BP: What’s new in the world of Down With Webster….where can we see you next, what’s coming up for the band?
TA: We’re currently planning a U.S release of the album and are demoing new songs already. If we had it our way we would release music weekly not annually! We just might start doing that :) We’re playing a lot of festivals this summer in Canada and start a U.S University tour in April. Hopefully we get some time off for the Leafs playoff run this spring. They’re going deep this year.
