Character And Longevity

robidas600sep30

Stephane Robidas’ arrival in Toronto this past summer was a continuation of the Leafs’ relationship with the Anaheim Ducks and their defencemen.

Francois Beauchemin and Jake Gardiner preceded Robidas who signed with Toronto as a free agent on July 1st.

At age 37 the Sherbrooke native begins his 16th campaign in the NHL just 5 months after breaking his right leg for a second time last season.

That particular night Robidas pondered the possibility that his career had finally come to an end.

” I thought about it right after the second break. I ...

Back To The Future

morrison600sept25

The Toronto Maple Leafs got a well deserved day off on Thursday as the team surpassed the midway point of its pre-season schedule Wednesday night.

The previous seven days has provided management and coaches with a valuable glimpse of where their team’s depth stands moving forward.

It was hard not to notice the smile on Dave Morrison’s face last night as a Leaf split squad entertained the Senators.

The Leafs’ Director of Amateur Scouting was thrilled knowing that Sam Carrick had just scored at Ottawa while watching Greg McKegg elevate his game in ...

Henny Notes From Day 4 Of Training Camp

bibeau644may21

Training camp commenced four days ago with most of the attention surrounding William Nylander and the possibility of the talented 18-year-old making the Leafs in his inaugural tryout.

And while Nylander hasn’t dissappointed, scoring a goal in scrimmage today, Antoine Bibeau has stood on his head forcing Leaf brass to turn theirs.

Bibeau continues to build on his all star efforts at the Memorial Cup last spring in London and last Tuesday’s 2-0 shutout of Pittsburgh in the rookie tournament.

Through two scrimmages at the MasterCard Centre in Etobicoke, Bibeau continues to provide ...

Henny Notes From Day 3 Of Training Camp

holland

It was an eventful third day of training camp in Etobicoke as the Leafs sprinted into on-ice drills and scrimmages.

The 64 man group broke off into two groups of four teams and the speed, tempo, and competitive nature of the camp was entertaining to say the least.

On the injury front head coach Randy Carlyle told us that both Tyler Bozak and David Clarkson had sustained lower body injuries while skating prior to camp. Carlyle added that both players are listed as day-to-day. The injured duo skated hard early Saturday in ...

Henny Notes From Day 2 Of Leafs Camp

reimer

The Leafs hit the ice at MasterCard Centre Friday for cardio testing prior to their first official on-ice workouts Saturday morning which will include scrimmages both Saturday and Sunday.

But when rosters were posted featuring Team Sittler versus Team Clark , scratches included Tyler Bozak and David Clarkson.

Randy Carlyle told the media via the Leaf PR staff that “both players were on the shelf.”

It’s expected that we’ll get further details Saturday.

Garret Sparks, Frederik Gauthier and Rinat Valiev were also on the list of scratches.

Of the many battles for starting jobs the ...

Baby Battle Of Ontario

rookietourney644sep12-3

The Leafs and Senators meet tonight in London in the second game for both teams at this rookie tournament.
The Leafs edged Chicago last night 4-2 while Ottawa dropped its opener against Pittsburgh 4-3.

Christopher Gibson will get the start for the Leafs tonight. Gibson and Garret Sparks are expected to battle for the Marlies top goaltending job when camp begins next week.

Head coach Gord Dineen said William Nylander, David Broll and Josh Leivo would be healthy scratches this evening.

Eric Knodel will sit as well following an impressive outing last night against ...

Leafs vs. Blackhawks Rookie Preview

socialsept13

The Maple Leafs kick off their rookie tournament in London tonight against Chicago at 7 P.M (Rogers TV and Rogers Digital Cable 368/369).

Tonight’s lines:
Broll-Verhaeghe-Nylander
Watling-Gauthier-Leivo
M.Rupert-R.Rupert-Biggs
Bowles-Findlay-Philip

Loov-Nilsson
Knodel-Donaghey
Finn-Fraser

Garret Sparks starts in net.

The Leafs will alternate A’s from game to to game. With seven NHL games under his belt and 23 goals with the Marlies last season, I’d expect Josh Leivo to wear a letter tonight.

Sparks grew up in suburban Chicago and will face longtime friend and teammate in Alex Broadhurst. Both played together growing up in the Chicago minor system and against each other ...

Swedish Legacy In Blue And White

nilsson600sept13

Borje Salming’s arrival in North America four decades ago marked the beginning of Sweden’s imprint on the Toronto Maple Leafs.

In recent years that legacy of Swedish talent continues on the blueline with the Leafs.

Scout Thommie Bergman’s influence has seen Toronto draft Carl Gunnarsson, Anton Stralman, Petter Granberg, and Viktor Loov .
And as Granberg closes in on an opportunity to make the big club you can add Tom Nilsson to that list as well.

Nilsson was taken in the 4th round in 2011 and comes to North America at age 21 having ...

Another Contribution From The Sault

BtKgq0xIQAE4STS

Sault Ste Marie’s contributions to hockey have been legendary.

Phil and Tony Esposito headline a long list of players who’ve made their mark over time. The management side has produced true builders of the game in Lou Nanne, Gene Ubriaco and Angelo Bumbacco.

The Leafs hiring of the Sault’s Kyle Dubas is an extension of that managerial lineage.

At age 28 the new assistant general manager maybe young but he’s been around the game his entire life.

His late grandfather Walter Dubas was head coach of the Greyhounds in the 1960’s.

A proverbial rink rat, ...
