Congrats to Maple Leafs play-by-play man Joe Bowen.
He was among the honourees at the 18th Annual Sports Media Canada Achievement Awards luncheon at the Royal York Hotel’s Canadian Room.
Bowen was recipient of the Sports Media Canada George Gross Award for Outstanding Broadcasting. His longtime sidekick Jim Ralph introduced Joe – Joe’s boyhood idol – the legendary Johnny Bower – handed the award to him.
MLSE President/CEO Tim Leiweke made the presentation for the Sports Media Canada George Gross Award for Career Achievement to Bob McCown, the host of Sportsnet’s Prime Time Sports. McCown was introduced by Stephen Brunt.
Leafs TV host Paul Hendrick introduced Halifax Mooseheads GM Cam Russell who received the Sports Media Canada George Gross Award for Sports Executive of the Year. Hockey Hall of Famer and former Leafs GM Jim Gregory presented the award to Russell.
Others honoured were Steve Simmons of Sun Media (Outstanding Sportswriting), the late Mike Cassese of Reuters (Outstanding Photography) and Dick Grimm (President’s Award). Added to the Sports Media Canada Honour Roll posthumously were Alec Bollini, Tom McKee and Frank Selke Jr.
