Maple Leafs rookies opened the three-game rookie tournament with a 3-2 shootout win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday. Tyler Biggs was the fifth shooter and his goal on Mac Carruth was the winner when Garret Sparks stopped Byron Froese.
Josh Leivo scored a power play goal in the first period and Brad Ross scored on a great shot to put the Leafs leading 2-0 after two periods. The Blackhawks replied with two third period goals forcing the game to overtime which didn’t produce a winner.
The night ended early for Leivo as according to head coach Steve Spott he left the game with a chest contusion.
