It was a good night for Leafs prospect Greg McKegg and the London Knights as they took a 2-1 series lead over the Niagara Ice Dogs. McKegg was held scoreless but he was on the ice for the Knights opening goal. Check out the higlights of the game

The Leafs third round choice in 2010, McKegg has posted two points with a +2 rating in the series so far. For the playoffs, the St. Thomas, Ontario native has 11 points in 13 games.

Keeping Tabs On The Prospects & World Championships

It was a winning weekend for both Brad Ross and Greg McKegg as their junior teams rebounded from Game 1 losses.

McKegg and the London Knights evened the series with a 5-3 Game 2 win. McKegg recorded an assist and was a plus one giving him two points in the first two games of the series. He was injured during the last round but he has produced at just less than a point a game pace as he has 11 points in 12 playoff games this year. The two teams are ...

World Championships Begin

The 2012 World Hockey Championships in Finland/Sweden began Friday with five Maple Leafs set to represent their countries.

The players we will keep an eye on for you are Dion Phaneuf (Canada), Luke Schenn (Canada), Joey Crabb (USA), Mikhail Grabovski (Belarus) and Nikolai Kulemin (Russia).

Two players (Phaneuf and Grabovski) will be alternate captains for their countries.

For the first time fans will be able to stream every game from the tournament on their computer through Youtube. Check it out here

Leafs prospect Brad Ross has been named the WHL Player Of The Week. Here is the press release from the WHL:

CALGARY, AB. – The Western Hockey League announced today that Portland Winterhawks forward Brad Ross is the WHL Player of the Week.

Ross collected four points, scoring two goals and two assists while maintained a +3 rating in two games over the last week, helping the Winterhawks capture the Kal Tire WHL Western Conference Championship with a 4-0 series win over the Tri-City Americans.

Ross & Winterhawks Advance To WHL Final

Maple Leafs prospect Brad Ross and the Portland Winterhawks swept the Tri-City Americans in the WHL West Final. The Winterhawks defeated the Americans 4-1 Thursday to move on to the WHL Final. It is the second consecutive season that Portland has won the WHL West title.

Their opponent for the WHL fianl has yet to be determined as the Edmonton Oil Kings lead the WHL East Final 3-1 over the Mosse Jaw Warriors.

The Weekend That Was For Prospects

The CHL playoffs were back in full swing over the weekend with prospect Brad Ross having the best start as the Portland Winterhawks are up 2-0 in the Western Conference Final on the Tri-City Americans following back-to-back 5-4 OT wins.

Ross has registered a goal and two assists in the two games with 10 penalty minutes. The two teams are off until Wednesday when they return to Portland for games three with game four set for the following night.

Three Prospects Keep Playoff Hopes Alive

Brad Ross and the Portland Winterhawks have moved on to the WHL’s Western Conference final after defeating the Kamloops Blazers 2-0 in Game 7 on Wednesday. After taking a 3-0 lead, the Winterhawks prevailed and they will now face the Tri-City Americans starting Friday.

Ross had a big series as he had 12 points (eight goals, four assists) in the seven games.

In the OHL, Greg McKegg and the London Knights will face Andrew Crescenzi and the Kitchener Rangers in the OHL’s Western Conference Final. The seriesbegins tonight in London.

Schenn Joins Canada For Worlds

Leafs defenceman Luke Schenn is joining Canada at the IIHF World Hockey Championship for the third time in four years.

Schenn joins Maple Leafs teammate Dion Phaneuf on Team Canada. Joey Crabb will be playing for Team USA which will be coached by Leafs assistant Scott Gordon. Greg Cronin will assist Gordon.

Schenn had 22 points (2-20) in 79 games for the Leafs this season.

Canada opens the world championship on May 4 with a game against Slovakia.

A couple of Maple Leafs will be taking part in the World Hockey Championships in Finland/Sweden starting May4th. Captain Dion Phaneuf will be representing Canada at the Worlds while Joey Crabb has been named to the USA roster. Both John-Michael Liles and Phil Kessel have said they will not take part while Carl Gunnarsson was injured the last week of the season and his status for the tournament was in doubt.

Carl Out, Others Could Be Back

The Maple Leafs took to the ice Wednesday morning minus defenceman Carl Gunnarsson. After being hit hard early in the first period during the 6-5 overtime loss to the Sabres on Tuesday, Gunnarsson will miss the final two games of the season with a separated shoulder.

 “It is a four to six week rehabilitation time frame before he is back to 100 per cent,” head coach Randy Carlyle said.

Four of the Maple Leafs prospects in the OHL have advanced to the second round of the playoffs.

Stuart Percy and the Mississauga St. Michaels Majors are facing elimination against Barrie tonight while goaltender Garret Sparks and the Guelph Storm were eliminated by the Plymouth Whalers in six games.

Abbott A Hobey Baker Finalist

The Leafs latest signing, Spencer Abbott is one of three finalists for the 2012 Hobey Baker Memorial Award honouring college hockey’s top player.

Abbott signed with Toronto on Wednesday after a four-year career with the Main Black Bears finishing his career with 146 points (54 goals, 92 assists) in 151 games . He led the NCAA in scoring this past season with 62 points (21 goals, 41 assists).

Scrivens Recalled, Rynnas Sent To Marlies

The Maple Leafs were once again without goalie James Reimer at practice Wednesday as he remained out with an upper body injury. Ben Scrivens was called up to take Reimer’s place as Jussi Rynnas was back with the Marlies a day after making his NHL debut in the 3-0 loss.

The Maple Leafs prospects began their playoffs last week. Here is a weekly update on how they and their teams are doing.

Ontario Hockey League:
Sam Carrick and the Brampton Battalion lead Josh Leivo and the Sudbury Wolves 2-0. Carrick has three points in the first two games and is tied for the team lead in points. Leivo has one goal in the first two games.

First round pick Stuart Percy has one point in the first two games as the Mississauga St. Michaels Majors and Barrie Colts are tied at 1-1.

With the Canadian Hockey League playoffs starting this weekend, there are quite a few Leafs prospects who will be taking part in the run to the Memorial Cup in Shawinigan, Quebec May 18-27.

Kulemin Out With Broken Finger

The tough season for Nikolai Kulemin continued Thursday when it was announced that he will be out for three weeks with a broken finger suffered in the loss Tuesday against Florida. Kulemin joins Mike Brown and Joffrey Lupul on the injured list.

This season has been the worst of Kulemin’s career as he has recorded just seven goals and 28 points one year after being a 30-goal scorer. Prior to his injury, Kulemin had recorded three points in the last 10 games.
