It was another strong weekend for Maple Leafs prospects as the CHL season is in full swing.

There was much interest in how 2011 first round pick Tyler Biggs would perform in his first season in the OHL and so far so good. Biggs had two points on the weekend to give him eight total for the season (five goals, three assists) along with a plus nine rating and 12 penalty minutes. The power forward had his five-game point streak snapped Sunday which saw him pick up eight points over that span. ...

That’s A Wrap From Stirling

It was another busy day in Stirling as our journey at Kraft Hockeyville 2012 ended with two more stops.

First up was a visit to the Honeywell House with Leafs alumni Tom Fergus, Dan Daoust and also Carlton The Bear. The players took questions from the youngsters in attendance. In the photo below you see who sat at the front of the class.

Stirling Celebrates At Alumni Game

The town of Stirling was treated to an NHL alumni game Sunday at the Stirling & District Recreation Centre as the highlight of the first day of Kraft Hockeyville. There were 17 former NHL players on the ice along with Hockey Night In Canada’s Ron MacLean plus several local residents. And a surprise visitor even made it but I’ll tell you about that later.

Kraft Hockeyville Kicks Off

The Kraft Hockeyville 2012 celebration in Stirling-Rawdon got off to a fun start Sunday afternoon with a parade to the Stirling & District Recreation Centre where tents were set up with activities for kids like rock climbing, slides, alumni signings, the Leafs Mobile Fan Zone and much more.

During the procession to the Stirling & District Recreation Centre there were bands playing, tractors, fire trucks and the Olympia ice cleaning machine.

Burke Has Plenty Of Praise For Rielly & Warriors

The CHL season kicked off last weekend and I had a blog entry on Monday with a full wrap up of how Leafs prospects performed.

Prospects Wrap Up

The first weekend in the CHL ended and we take a look at how the Leafs prospects performed.

Mississauga captain Stuart Percy recorded one goal over the weekend as the Steelheads split their first two games of the season. Percy scored in Sunday’s 3-2 win over Barrie as he was also a +2.

Tyler Biggs played his first two OHL games for the Oshawa Generals and the rugged forward dropped the gloves in his first game. He picked up his first OHL point (assist) in Friday’s 4-2 loss to Sudbury.

Prospects To Begin Season

The 2012-13 Ontario Hockey League season is set to begin tonight with Leafs prospect Tyler Biggs playing his first game in the OHL with the Oshawa Generals against Peterborough.

“I’m really excited to get everything going,” Biggs said in an interview with the Toronto Star. “I’ve been waiting all summer just to play hockey, to be part of something and I think we can do big things here.”

Finn Named Captain Of Guelph Storm

The Ontario Hockey League is closing in on the opening of the 2012-13 season and it was announced Tuesday by the Guelph Storm that Leafs 2012 second round pick Matt Finn has been named captain for the junior club this season.

Finn took to Twitter after the announcement. Give him a follow @brotherfinner

The Toronto, Ontario native had a breakthrough season with the Storm last season recording 48 points (10 goals, 38 assists) in 61 games. He was named the Storm’s Most Valuable Player.

Leafs Hit The Links For Team Up Foundation

The Maple Leafs players, coaches, management and alumni teed off in the Leafs and Legends Charity Golf  Classic at Rattlesnake Point Golf Club in Milton on Monday in support of the MLSE Team Up Foundation. It was a beautiful day on the links and a great time was had by all.

Funds raised during the tournament will support the refurbishment of local Greenwood outdoor rink and Camp Maple Leaf.

Leafs Sign Holzer

A stalwart with the Marlies defence has signed a new contract with the Maple Leafs. It was announced on Monday that defenceman Korbinian Holzer has a new one-year contract with the Leafs.

The 24-year-old native of Munich, Germany played 67 regular season games with the Toronto Marlies last season. He recorded 20 points (one goal, 19 assists) along with 68 PIMs and a plus seven rating. Holzer played in all 17 playoff games where he had five points and a plus two rating.

A Busy Off-Season For Franson

Cody Franson was back at school Friday … the Leafs Hockey School that is. The Leafs defenceman was in town to help out on-ice activities for the day at MasterCard Centre.

“It’s fun, that was me back in the day and I haven’t forgotten those days and how much fun they are for kids,” Franson said.

Stirling-Rawdon Rewarded As Hockeyville Winner

This year’s Kraft Hockeyville winner was Stirling-Rawdon, Ontario and in addition to hosting a 2012-13 NHL preseason game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Columbus Blue Jackets on October 3, the community also receives the $100,000 prize for arena upgrades from Kraft.

McKegg, Knights Into Semi-Finals At Memorial Cup

The London Knights have guaranteed themselves at least a berth in the Memorial Cup semi-finals on Friday following a 4-1 win over the Edmonton Oil Kings. Check out the highlights

Kuli Wins Gold, Memorial Cup In Full Swing

The 2012 World Hockey Championships came to a close over the weekend with Russia winning the Gold medal over Slovakia 6-2. In the Bronze medal game, the Czech Republic defeated 3-2.

Nikolai Kulemin had one shot on net in the Gold Medal victory playing just over 12 minutes. He finished the tournament with four points in 10 games with a +4 rating while averaging 14:21 per game.

Canada Bounced From Worlds

The quarter-finals at the 2012 World Hockey Championships began Thursday with Canada being eliminated after suffering a 4-3 loss to Slovakia. It was the third straight season that Canada has been bounced during the quarter-final.

Canada led 3-2 with just over seven minutes to play when Milan Bartovic tied the game at 13:25. As Canada was killing off a penalty to Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Ryan Getzlaf was given a kneeing major with 17:28 gone in the period. It took Slovakia four seconds to score the winning goal.

Quarter-Finals All Set

The 2012 World Hockey Championships are starting to wind down with the quarter-final games all set. Team Canada finished first in the Helsinki group and they will now face Slovakia Thursday.  With Canada finishing first in the group, they can’t face the powerful Russians until the final which is Sunday May 20. The other match ups include: Finland vs. USA, Russia vs. Norway and Sweden vs. Czech Republic.

McKegg & The Knights Memorial Cup Bound

There will be one Leafs prospect taking part in the 2012 Memorial Cup as Greg McKegg and the London Knights are OHL Champions. The Knights defeated the Niagara Ice Dogs in five games including winning the final four games of the series. Check out the highlights of the clinching win.
