Quarter-Finals All Set At World Juniors


The 2013 World Junior Championships have moved on to the quarter-finals and all four Leafs prospects are still alive to win the Gold medal.

Morgan Rielly and Canada faced Russia with top spot in Group B on the line and Canada came out on top 4-1 thanks to two first period power play goals during a five minute man advantage.  Canada will now get a bye to the semi-finals where they will face the winner of the USA/Czech Republic game while Russia takes on Switzerland in the quarter-finals Wednesday (8am, TSN).

Canada Continues Perfect Record


Sunday brought the showdown between Canada and the USA and it was an intense game with Canada just hanging on for the 2-1 win. Canada was ahead 2-0 after 40 minutes and despite having several chances to increase the lead it was nail biting finish.

With the win, Canada is now 3-0-0 and leading Group B with 9 points. Russia is second with 8 points and the winner of the New Year’s Eve game between the two rivals will finish first and get a bye to the semi-final. Watch the game Monday (9am ...

Quiet Day At World Juniors


Saturday saw just one Leafs prospect playing at the 2013 World Junior Championships in Ufa, Russia as defenceman Tom Nilsson and Sweden defeated Latvia 5-1 to move to 2-1-0-0 giving them eight points and top spot in Group A.

The Swedes led 2-1 after two periods despite a huge shot advantage (32-11) after 40 minutes of action. Nilsson continues to look for his first point of the tournament but the stay at home blueliner had one shot and a +1 rating.

Huge Game From Rielly Leads Canada


Leafs prospect Morgan Rielly was outstanding for Canada in their 6-3 come from behind win over Slovakia to improve to 2-0-0 at the 2013 World Junior tournament.

“As a team I think this will help us down the road,” Rielly told TSN after the game. “We understand that every team in this tournament is pretty good and we have to play well every night and tonight we were put to the test and we played well down the stretch.”

Latest From World Juniors In Russia


Thursday was the second day of the 2013 World Junior tournament and just one Leafs prospect was in action as Tyler Biggs and the USA routed Germany 8-0.  Biggs didn’t record a point in the win but he had two shots along with an even rating and two penalty minutes.

Fellow Leafs prospect Garret Sparks was the third goalie for the US on Thursday.

World Juniors Begin


The 2013 World Junior tournament begin early Wednesday morning with two Leafs prospects playing their first game.

Morgan Rielly is manning the point for Team Canada and in a big 9-3 win over Germany, he recorded one assist along with a plus one mark and three shots. If you missed the game, a replay will be on TSN at Noon ET and 7:30pm ET.  Canada will have a day off on Thursday before being back in action Friday against Slovakia (4:30am ET, TSN).

Junior Tourney Draws Closer

Leaf prospect Tyler Biggs is accruing a solid record of international experience.

The 2013 World Junior Championships are set to begin on Boxing Day and on Thursday it was a chance for four of the teams to play in precompetition games in Finland.

With less than a week to go before the start of the tournament, it appears that the Leafs could have four prospects taking part in the tournament. Morgan Rielly (Canada), Tyler Biggs (USA), Garret Sparks (USA) and Tom Nilsson (Sweden).

Canada fell 3-2 to Finland with Rielly being held pointless in the game with an even rating in 17:34 of action. ...

Arenas Played First Game December 19th


Today is a special day in the history of hockey in Toronto. It was on this date, December 19th, 1917 that the Toronto Arenas played their first ever game against the Montreal Wanderers.

While the Arenas would lose the game 10-9, they would go on to win the O’Brien Cup which was the NHL Final over the Montreal Canadiens winning the two-game total-goals series 10-7.

Toronto would go on to win the Stanely Cup as they defeated the Vancouver Millionaires (PCHA Champions) winning the best of five series, 3-2.

Kids Turn Out For Free Clinics Tuesday


Many students in the GTA were off school Tuesday but thanks to the Leafs and Marlies quite a few of them found themselves at MasterCard Centre for free on ice Leafs and Marlies clinics.

They opened the sessions with a meeting at centre as you can see below.

After a short warmup, it was a visit to the Marlies dressing room.

One lucky participant was interviewed by CityTV.

Biggs, Sparks Named To Preliminary US Roster



With the World Junior Championships set to begin on December 26th, two more Leafs propsects were invited to junior camps on Tuesday. Forward Tyler Biggs and goalie Garret Sparks have been invited to the USA Junior camp which begins on December 18th.

Biggs was the Leafs first round selection in 2011. He is playing his first season with the OHL’s Oshawa Generals and he currently has 31 points (15 goals, 16 assists) in 30 games. He is second on the Generals in scoring.

Rielly Invited To Canada’s World Junior Camp


Maple Leafs prospect Morgan Rielly was one of 37 players who have been invited to Canada’s World Junior Camp that begins December 10th in Calgary. Canada opens the tournament December 26th against Finland.

Rielly spoke with the Moose Jaw Warriors web site shortly after the announcement:

Sundin Back At The ACC For Legends Game


The Hockey Hall of Fame Legends Game took place Sunday in front of a packed Air Canada Centre as fans were able to watch the 2012 Inductees, Mats Sundin, Adam Oates, Joe Sakic and Pavel Bure in game action after receiving their HHOF Honoured Members blazer and ring.

Mats Sundin was the last player introduced and he got a standing ovation from the adoring crowd as you will see in the video below:

Rielly Racking Up The Points


It was another strong week for Leafs 2012 first round pick Morgan Rielly. The Mosse Jaw Warriors defenceman picked up one goal and three assists in four games last week. His lone goal was the game winner and pretty sweet as you can see in this video.

Rielly currently leads all WHL defencemen in scoring with 19 points (four goals, 15 assists). He has five points in the last five games and he was recently named to the WHL roster to face Russia in the Subway Super Series on November 14 & 15.

The Week That Was For Leafs Prospects


It was a relatively quiet week for the Leafs prospects playing in the CHL.

After a recording five assists on October 13th, Morgan Rielly has three points (one goal, two assists) in the last three games with a minus 1 rating. He is currently tied for second in the WHL scoring amongst defencemen with 15 points. His 12 assists lead all WHL defencemen.

Hugh Arthur Smythe Passes Away


It is with sadness that the Maple Leafs organization learned of the passing of Hugh Arthur Smythe the son of Leafs founder Conn Smythe.  Hugh passed away at his home in Toronto Sunday at the age of 85.

The Smythe family will always be connected with the Maple Leafs as Hugh’s father Conn bought the Toronto St. Pats in 1927 and immediately had the Toronto franchise name changed from the St. Pats to Maple Leafs. He also switched the uniform colours to blue and white from green and white.

Rielly Has Impressive Weekend


Maple Leafs prospects continue to have excellent starts to their season none better than Morgan Rielly who had a huge weekend for Moose Jaw.

Rielly, the Leafs first round pick in 2012 recorded five assists and was a plus five in the Warriors 9-0 win over Prince Albert. He has been on a tear picking up seven helpers in the last four games. For the season he has 12 points (two goals, 10 assists) and a plus 4 mark. He sits tied for second in scoring amongst defencemen in the WHL.

Prospects Have Stellar Weekend



It was another strong weekend for Maple Leafs prospects as the CHL season is in full swing.

There was much interest in how 2011 first round pick Tyler Biggs would perform in his first season in the OHL and so far so good. Biggs had two points on the weekend to give him eight total for the season (five goals, three assists) along with a plus nine rating and 12 penalty minutes. That’s A Wrap From Stirling

It was another busy day in Stirling as our journey at Kraft Hockeyville 2012 ended with two more stops.

First up was a visit to the Honeywell House with Leafs alumni Tom Fergus, Dan Daoust and also Carlton The Bear. The players took questions from the youngsters in attendance. In the photo below you see who sat at the front of the class.
